(Ophthalmology Oral History Series : A Link With Our Past) ACCESSION #: 533 7 Cornelius Rea AGNEW Papers, MS C 272 Scope and Content Note Cornelius Rea Agnew was born on 8 August 1830 in New York City. Francis R. Packard in his History of Medicine in the United States provides a brief overview of Agnew's life: "Ke graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York in 1852, having as his preceptor John Kearny Rodgers. Agnew went out to Michigan to practice but shortly afterwards returned to New York, having received, probably through the influence of Rodgers, the appointment of surgeon to the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in which his preceptor had great authority. Before assuming the duties of the position Agnew went abroad for post- graduate study, which he carried out under Sir William Wilde in Dublin, William Bowman in London, and Sichel and Desmarres in Paris. Returning to New York he entered upon a most successful career." "Agnew was a born organizer. He was one of the founders of the Brooklyn Eye and Ear Hospital, and of the Manhattan Eye and Ear Infirmary, also of the American Ophthalmological and the American Otological Societies. In 1866 he established the eye clinic in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York, and from 1869 until his death he was Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology and Otology in that institution." He died in New York in 1888. The Agnew papers in the National Library of Medicine were purchased from Gillman Booksellers in 1972. The collection consists of four manuscript boxes of correspondence covering the period from 1857 to his death in 1888. It is arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent; an index to the correspondents in the collection is attached. The correspondence is of a general medical and professional nature. While no particular group of correspondence is particularly extensive, there are several interesting groups of material. Special mention may be made of the correspondence with leaders in ophthalmology such as Henry Willard Williams, with John Shaw Billings on cholera research and the Index Medicus, with Grover Cleveland on the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the correspondence relating to the creation of a Code of Ethics for the State of New York Medical Society. Some foreign consultation correspondence is also found in the collection, as are several letters from Agnew sent to others. The library has placed no restrictions on the material. The library has no rights of copyright in the material and so researchers are cautioned that they must secure any permissions needed to cite, quote, or reproduce the material. 5 March 1989 AGNEW, Cornelius Rea MS. He received an A.B. degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1873, and in 1874 graduated from Harvard Divinity School. In 1888 Gould received an M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College, followed a year later by an A.M. degree from Ohio Wesleyan. Gould settled in Philadelphia where he specialized in ophthalmology. In addition to his ophthalmological practice, Gould was an active writer and editor. Among his more notable accomplishments were the compilation of medical dictionaries (continued today by Blackiston's New Gould Medical Dictionary), and his editorship of the Philadelphia Medical Journal. American Medicine, and Medical News. Under Gould's direction the Association of Medical Librarians (later the Medical Library Association) was formed; additional correspondence from Gould can be found in their archives, also in the library. Gould died in Atlantic City, New Jersey on 8 August 1922 at the age of seventy- three. The collection consists of seven document cases and one volume. The bulk of the collection consists of notes, correspondence and biographical and autographical fragments assembled by Mrs. Gould for a projected biography of her husband. The material is identified as "Material found in envelopes" in the container listing. Some of Gould's correspondence with his aunts and some correspondence with his colleagues on his ministerial and medical careers is also in the collection. Major correspondents include: James Bonar, Sir James Johnston Dobbie, Bayard Holmes, J. G. Kello, Johannes Klopsch, William James Morton, William E. Smyser, Julius M. Swain, David S. Uttes, and Henry James Wolstenholme. In addition to the biographical material and correspondence, the collection contains six scrapbooks of clippings primarily on eyestrain but including material on other medical subjects as well. A record of some of Gould's ophthalmologic cases completes the collection. There is no deed of gift for Gould's papers. While researchers are free to examine the material, they are responsible for securing any needed permission to publish from the collection. 1 Gould, George M. Papers, 1858-1933. MS.
