VUttaflelDMg &7/ *S&. % % Vrv FOR THE treatment of all TVledical and Surgical diseases Offices, Laboratory a9d Dispe9sary 931 <& 933 Arch Street }$*- PHILADELPHIA, PA. Philadelphia BeIIeyue Institute Of MEdicinE and SurgEry. Some twenty-five years ago, when my practice was increasing in the treatment of Chronic and Surgical diseases, and when patients were coming from great dis- tances, it became necessary to secure a suitable building for their accommodation and treatment. To this end a large structure was purchased, in the western part of the city, and which was practically the origin of the Philadelphia Bellevue In- A stitute of Medicine and Surgery. It was however, found in time, that its remote- ness from the centre of the city was attended with many difficulties, and hence, in 1876 it was sold, and patients removed to more central locations. The offices of the Institute, however, were retained at 10th and Arch Streets, Because of the impossibility of a vast number of afflicted living at great distances, to come even to so central a place as Philadelphia, a series of conven- ient methods were introduced, for correspondence with, and sending medicine to, the afflicted at their homes, in which tens of thousands of invalids have been successfully treated. This is effected by the answering of a series of questions, through which we are enabled to diagnose the complaint with much accuracy, and by referring the corres- pondence to its special department, we are enabled to prepare and forward a suit- able course of treatment, specifically adapted to each individual’s diseased condition, with almost as much confidence of success as though the patient were present in the office of our Institute. In fact, of the tens of thousands of patients treated, cured and at present under treatment, not one in the hundred has ever consulted us personally at the Institute. In the practice of medicine, as well as in the arts and sciences, and in all in- dustries pursued by man, they instinctively incline to that which meets their approval. This is especially the case with the physician in hospital practice, in the selection of remedies, for where there are a large class of patients of the same type to be prescribed for, the physician, for convenience sake and with equal success, formulates certain remedies which cover a large field in his practice, and which by their general use, become favorite prescriptions or remedies. In this manner (through the “ Institute ”), many preparations have come into use, a number of which are most extensively used at present all over the country. They are not in any sense, patent medicines, but are prepared with great care, out of the very best remedies obtainable, by the best pharmaceutical skill, and with the highest degree of merit we have been able to command. They have therefore become meritoriously popular; are largely sought, and have very extensive sale all the country over. EPILEPSY OR FALLING FITS, Falling Sickness, Frothing Convulsions, Jerking Spasms, and all Nervous Diseases. Of all the morbid affections to which our frail and afflicted race is subject, the most horrible and appalling in appearance, are convulsions. These generally consist of a series of rapid and forcible contractions of the muscles, alternating with relaxation of the same,—the hands, however, are almost always clenched, the thumb, being drawn within the palm, while the arms and legs are ©ften thrust out with such sudden- ness and force as to seriously injure those who may come to his or her assistance. The violent agitation of the frame in Epileptic convulsions, attended with the horrid writhings and twistings of the body, presen1 s an aspect of unutterable distress, while the frightful distortions and grimaces of the “human face divine,” make up a scene which it is impossible for the hardest heart to witness unmoved, or even to contemplate without the most profound and heartfelt sorrow. The degree of force exerted by the convulsed muscles, constitutes a power most extraordinary, and vastly beyond the most determined will in health. Young infants, wasted in- valids, and feeble women, under the influence of involuntary spasms or convulsions, draw up and extend their limbs with such force as can scarcely be resisted by the best efforts of the most robust men. In ordinary Epileptic seizures, the patient utters a cry or silently falls to the ground, generally backwards ; his eyes opened widely and vacantly, with fixed countenance, complexion pale or livid, rarely flushed. This state or stage lasts only for a moment, for convulsions come on almost immediately with horrid distortions of visage, rotation of head, clenched hands, and limbs reflexed and thrown out as before described. The tongue is frequently caught between the teeth and a bloody froth or foam gathers about the lips; the patient some- times moans piteously or cries out piercingly, his urine is often insensibly voided and his bowels involuntarily moved. The duration of this horrid state may last but a minute or two, or some eight, ten or fifteen minutes. No age, sex, or condition of life is free from its curse. Epilepsy may occur soon after birth, and is met with in early childhood, at puberty, in adult as well as in advanced life. To repeat, in confirmed Epilepsy the patient falls suddenly, without warning, losing all conscious- ness and sensibility, and his whole frame is violently agitated by convulsive movements, which after The annexed diagram rep- resents a back view of the brain and spinal cord, or great nerve and Its branches, and gives a very good idea of the way in which the nerves spread and ramify throughout the body; it also shows plainly the different divisions of the back portion of the brafn, the study of which is all impor- tant to the physician who un- dertakes the treatment of the nervous system. These are frequent occurrences with Epileptic Fit Cases. a few minutes subside, leaving him languid, stupid, vacant and comatose. Though this is an outline of an habitual Epileptic fit, yet the reader must be impressed and made fully sensible of the fact, that sometimes and even in bad cases, we have but the premonitory symptoms present, characterized by dizziness, intense pain in the head, vertigo, confusion of ideas, and great mental depression, with or without weeping. Sometimes the patient is petulant or violent, at other times shows an unsteady gait with a disposition to hurry forwards or backwards, sometimes tormented with a roaring in the ears or flashing light before the eyes, etc. Sometimes the entire paroxysm is manifested by a mere suspension of the faculties of the mind, the patient looking fixedly, sitting rigidly or falling without being convulsed. The characteristics of this fell disease are so varied and numerous, while different patients manifest so many strange freaks and peculiarities that it is impossible to set forth the eccen- tricities of this protean—ever changing—disease. The uncertainty of the occurrence of the paroxysms, convulsions or fits, causes this disease to be more dreaded than any to which we are subject; sometimes the regularity of their occurrence forms a remark- able characteristic of this formidable malady. They often come at the moment of falling asleep, in the middle of the night, or just as the patient rises in the morning ; but the wretched patient is never safe. When sitting by the cheerful fire, he knows not what moment he may be thrown headlong into the blazing grate ; when walking in the country or city, should he attempt to cross over to the other side of the road or street, he may fall in front of a carriage or car and helplessly be crushed; he cannot walk with safety along the banks of rivulet, lake or river, in spring-time or harvest, without being liable to fall into their waters and be drowned ; he cannot, with any security, at any time ascend a height, even a ladder, or a tree to pluck some enticing fruit, without being subject to an unexpected fit, and falling, be taken up a mangled, broken corpse. Oh! if there is a disease upon the face of the earth to be dreaded, if there is one that enlists all your sympathies for the unutterable woe that it entails, when it dethrones reason itself, the crowning glory of mankind, it is Epilepsy. This disease most vividly represents “The Old Man of the Sea,” in its inextricable grip, for its tendency is to cling to him through weal and woe till bereft of reason, and until death terminates his unutterable sufferings. 3 “Great Nerve Restorer!” Dr. KUNE’S Great Nerve Restorer IS A TRULY MARVELOUS MEDICINE FOR ALL DISEASES OF THE Brain, Heart and Nervous System. Self Destruction, and all general nerv- ousness produced by imprudence, Ex- cesses and Indiscretion, “ The Great Nerve Restorer,” stands preeminently unrivalled as the only remedy that will effect an almost immediate and per- manent cure, in fact, it is truly won- derful. The “Great JJerve pestorer” Has become a household name through- out the United States, Canadas and por- tions of foreign Countries, as being the very best Nerve Restorer extant. Try it at once, and take no bogus or so-called Nervines or Nerve Remedies, claiming to perform cures or no pay, as they are worthless and prepared only by impos- tors. Physicians of repute never resort to such subterfuge to obtain practice. C3F“Free trial bottle invariably fur- nished to all new cases when requested. Its Magical Effects in the Relief and Cure of all forms ol Nervousness, Nervous Debility, Nervous Prostration, Broken Down Constitution, all Irri- table, Excitable and Unsteady Nervous Affections, are x-eally miraculous. Instantaneous Relief is Effected by the First Dose or Few Doses of the Medicine. A NEW VIGOR IS IMPARTED TO THE EN- TIRE NERVOUS SYSTEM. NERVES OF MAN. The annexed diagram rep- resents a back view of the brain and spinal cord, or great nerve and its branches, and gives a very good idea of the way in which the nerves spread and ramify throughout the body; it also shows plainly the different divisions of the back portion of the brain, the study of which is all important to the physician who undertakes the treatment of the nervous system. N erves of the lower limbs. This remedy acts DIRECTLY and SPECIFICALLY upon the BRAIN, and NERVOUS CENTRES; it restores lost ACTION of the BRAIN, and VITALIZES the NERVOUS SYSTEM. It is an IN- FALLIBLE remedy for CHOREA or ST. VITUS’ DANCE. All spasmodic Action—Fits, Epilepsy, Falling Sickness, Nervous Choking or Smothering Spells, are instantly stopped as if by magic. Not a day passes that Dr. Kline is not receiving letters of praise and thanks from patients who have taken his Great Nerve Restorer stating that they were immediately relieved or cured by the first few doses, or by the use of the con- tents of the first bottle, years upon years elapsing without a return of any symp- toms of Nervousness whatever. BRAIN CONGESTION and FULL- NESS or RUSH of BLOOD TO THE HEAD, are arrested at once, Swimming of the Head, VERTIGO and DIZZINESS are promptly cured. For NERVOUS HEADACHE and INSOMNIA or NERV-, OUS WAKEFULNESS, it is a Speciflo. It brings sweet repose and refreshment to the tired brain. It is particularly adapted to NERVOUS and DELICATE LADIES. For all those despondent symptoms which occur from Nervous Debility such as Loss of Memory, Melancholia, Aver- sion to Society, Confusion of Ideas, Fear and Dread of Coming Danger, Sense oi The Brain and Its Convolutions. PLATE.—Upper sur- face of the Brain of man, showing its sub- division by the longi- tudinal fissure into two lateral hemi- spheres, right and left, also the chief sulci and convolutions. The fissures of Kolando are the oblique fissures which commence near the middle line and proceed outwards and forwards, marking off the Frontal lobes, a, a, from the Parietal lobes, which lie behind those fissures. The Occipi- tal lobes, forming the _ Posterior extremity of the Hemispheres, completely conceal the Cerebellum. 4 Brain Congestion. Brain Congestion or fullness and rush of blood to the head, is due to an accumulation of blood in the veins of the brain, thus producing Drowsiness, Stupor, Vertigo, Faintness, Spasmodic Action, and a general depression of the different organs of the body. Treatment.—Give immediately free action to the bowels, by taking full doses of the Pill of Pills; follow the action by taking the Elixir Vitae or New Life, in sufficiently large doses to keep the bowels thoroughly opened for several days afterward. Control and quiet the Nervous System by taking the Nerve Restorer in sufficiently large doses after meals and at bed-time, well diluted in water. If much weakness exists, take the Antiseptic Tonic between meals. Vertigo, Dizziness or Swimming of the Head. Symptoms.—Dizziness or Giddiness, Mental Confusion and inability to stand without a complete loss of con- sciousness has a fixed, open, meaningless eye, and slight, partial convulsions, as of a hand, an arm, one of the mus- cles of the face, etc. If standing at the time of the at- tack, the patient may fall. If sitting or lying, the at- tack may pass by with scarcely a notice of the same. These attaeks seldom last a minute, frequently continue for several weeks, gradually increasing in intensity, and at length, if not properly treated, terminating in that terrible disease, Epilepsy. Treatment.—If any obstruction or derangement of the general secretions exist, the “ Elixir Vitae.” or the “Anti-Bilious Elixir,” or the “Pill of Pills ” should be taken as the case may require, in sufficient quantities or doses to keep the bowels well open. Then allay nervous irritability of the system by taking the Nerve Restorer after meals and at bed-time in sufficiently large doses, to overcome all nervous excitability, then continue on regularly with lessened doses to prevent a return of the attacks. Afterward take the Antiseptic Tonic between meals. Nervous Debility Is to be found among all classes of people and all ages. Symptoms.—Poor appetite, dis- turbed sleep, a feeling of being tired on awakening in the morning and un- able to rise without great effort. The patient is perverse and irritable, con- stantfatigue. loss of power, premature decay, and a general prostrated con- dition of all the vital forces, until finally complete exhaustion results. Causes.—Excesses, Indiscretions, Old Age, Indulgences, Weaknesses, Chronic Affections or diseases, etc., and any derangement of the general secretions, producing dys- peptic symptoms. Mai Assimilation with Mal-Nutri- tion, etc. Treatment.—Give tone and vigor to the nervous sys- tem by taking the “ Nerve Restorer ” regularly after meals and at bed-time, in sufficiently large doses to ob- tain the desired result, see general instructions. If bowels be very much constipated the “Pill of Pills” should betaken, sufficient to overcome the constipation, and the action maintained afterward with the Elixir Vitas or New Life, in sufficient doses to correct the general secretions and keep the bowels regular. A diet easy of digestion; together with open air exercise, are essential. Where much debility exists, the Anti- septic Tonic should be taken. Nervoua Wakefulness. This is generally the result of over excitement of the brain, Mental Labors, General Debility, use of and general suspension of stimulants, as tea, coffee, tobacco, joy, fear, grief, anticipation, etc., all act as exciting causes. Treatment.—Control and quiet the Nervous System with the “Nerve Restorer,” taken in sufficiently large doses after each meal and at bed-time, to have the de- sired effect and induce pleasant repose. Take the Elixir Vitae or New Life in sufficient quantities ordoses before meals to keep the bowels well open and the general secretions corrected; afterwards take the Antiseptic Tonic to give tone to the mucuous membrane, and gen- eral system. Nervous Headache. The Symptoms are very much diversified in charac- ter. It may be cunfined to one small spot, over one or both eyes, one or both temples, one or both sides of the head, or diffused over the entire su, face of the head. Sometimes it Is fixed, sometimes changeable in its posi- tion. It may continue for an instant, or last for hours, days, or even weeks. Causes.—Strong mental emotion, bodily fatigue, loss of appetite, sedentary habits, constipation, loss of sleep, excesses at the table, strong tea, coffee or to- bacco. Treatment.—Take the “Elixir Vitae or New Life,” or the “Anti-Bilious Elixir,” in teaspoonful doses (more or less) before meals, or sufficient to open the bowels and to give tone and energy to the digestive organs, correct the general secretions and keep the bowels well regulated. Then, after this has been ac- complished, the “Nerve Restorer” should be taken in teaspoonful doses (more orless),or sufficient to control the nervous system and prevent a return of an attack. During the paroxysms a teaspoonful of the “Nerve Ro- storer” should be given every one, two or three hours, until relief and sound sleep is induced. A continuation of this course of treatment is almost a sure, and per- manent cure. Morbid. Vigilance and Stupor Are a lower grade of vascular excitement, proceeding in many instances from over-excitement of the brain, fre- quently resulting from the use of coffee or tea, or lrom anxiety, reverses, etc., overloaded stomach, loss of blood and all depressing influences. Treatment.—Take one teaspoonful of Dr. Kline’s “ (Treat Nerve Restorer,” diluted in water, two or three times a day, and one, two or three teaspoonfuls at bed- time, or sufficient to overcome the inability to sleep. If the stomach be overloaded, take the “Elixir Vitae,” or the “Anti-Bilious Elixir.” before meals in sufficiently large doses to keep the bowels well openand the general secretions corrected. If much debilitated takethe Anti- septic Tonic. Over-Worked Business Men, And those with shattered or broken-down constitutions the result of close application to business confinement anxiety, care and losses. Treatment.—The “Nerve Restorer” should be given in one half teaspoonful doses, diluted in water, after each meal, or in just sufficient quantity when necessary to control and quiet the nervous system. Incases of In- somnia, or Nervous Wakefulness, one, two or three teaspoonfuls of the “Nerve Restorer” should be given upon retiring or sufficient to induce quiet, rest and sound sleep. The general secretions should be corrected by occasional doses of the “Elixir Vitae or New Life.” If there be much loss of appetite and general debility, the Antiseptic Ton'c is the remedy required. Nervous and Delicate Ladies. The number of delicately organized ladies afflicted with some of the minor Nervous Affections are legion. They are to be found among those who are easily ex- cited or irritated; debilitated by over-work or by long sickness; Approach of Maturity, Change of Life, etc. Uterine troubles always produce Nervousness, and con- tinuing. they cast a shadow over the happy, cheerful household. Treatment.—Correct the digestion, improve the ap- petite, relieve constipation, if existing, by taking Dr. •Kline’s “Elixir Vitas” or “New Life” in prescribed doses before meals. Give full restoration to the Ner- vous System and quiet its functions by taking the Nerve Restorer in moderate doses after each meal and at bed-time, well diluted in water. If Displacements, Ulcerations, Inflammations, Congestions, Irritations, or any derangement of t he Reproductive Organs or adja- cent parts exist, Dr Kline’s “Sachet de Medecin,” and the Female Restorer together with other treatments, should be resorted to. In case of much debility the Antiseptic Tonic should be taken. my work, « Woman and Her Diseases,” imparling necessary information. Mailed on applica- tion. 5 Hysteria and Spasmodic Nervousness Are Nervous disorders, largely emotional and generally of a paroxysmal character and of the most varied forms, which come rapidly and which are of uncertain dura- tion. Symptoms.—At the outset, signs of emotional excite- ment are noticed, such as smiles, tears, and irrepressi- ble laughter, and sobs, brought about by trifling causes, which increase until violent convulsions result. Symptoms of the paroxysms are convulsive move- ments of the trunk and limbs, clenched hands, beating ofthe breast, tearing of the hair or clothing, together with shrieks and screams, violent agitation, etc. The attack ends with tears, convulsive outbreaks of crying or laughter, and sometimes with obstinate hiccough. Occasionally the patient sinks to the floor insensible and exhausted, remaining so fora short time, recover- ing tired, crying, and even sometimes singing. Causes.—Sometimes they are inherited. Thefemale constitution is especially favorable to the attacks of these diseases, and they are very apt to occur between the ages of twelve and thirty. Sedentary habits, con- finement to an impure air, vicious practices, etc., etc. The exciting causes are excessive ambition, startling sights and sounds, astounding intelligence, surprise, terror, anger, hatred or vexation, jealousy, grief, disap- pointment and extremes of heat and cold. Treatment.—Restore the nervous system to its na- tural condition by taking the “ Great Nerve Kestorer” in teaspoonful doses, more or less, well diluted in water, after meals and at bed-time. Keep the bowels well open and the general secretions corrected by taking the “Elixir Vitae” or “New Life,” in teaspoonful doses, more or less, before meals. If much constipation exists, take the “Pill of Pills” in full doses at bed-time. The disordered functions of the Uterine System, if existing, should be invigorated and corrected by Ur. Kline’s “Female Restorer,” Antiseptic Tonic, or the Alterative Tonic, together with Dr. Kline’s Sachet de Medecin and other treatments, if required. For full particulars concerning female com- plaints in general see my illustrated work, “ Woman and Her Diseases.” Despondency, Melancholia, Aversion to Society, Fear and Dread of Com- ing' Danger, Sense of Self Destruction. These are purely Nervous Conditions, in which the activity of the mental faculties (the mind) is greatly diminished or lessened. Symptoms.—These characteristics are marked. Want of energy, lack of buoyancy, depression of spirit, some- times leading to a suicidal tendency. Causes.—These vary from real toimaginary losses, etc., domestic infelicities, crosses m life, sudden death of a near relative or friend, disappointments pertaining to marriage, etc, Treatment.—First rouse the stomach and liver to in- creased action. Promote the appetite andstimulatethe bowels by taking the “ Elixir Vitae ” or the “ Anti-Bili- ous Elixir” in teaspoonful doses, more or less, before meals. Then soothe and strengthen the nervous system by teaspoonful doses of the “Nerve Restorer ” after meals, and at bed-time in somewhat larger doses. Active open air exercise, walking, traveling, ming- ling in society, etc., will prove highly beneficial as an aid in the treatment. Unpleasant Dreams, Palpitation or Flut- tering of the Heart, Dots or Specks Before the Byes. These several different conditions most frequently arise from a morbid state of the nervous system, to- gether with disordered digestion and derangement of tho general secretions. Causes.— Excitement, anxiety, fear, anticipation, sud- den or unexpected revelations, they may also be due to the varied forms of indigestiou and general derange- ment of the functions of the Brain and Nervous Sys- tem. Treatment.—The “Elixir Vitae” or “New Life” should be taken in teaspoonful doses (more or less) be- fore meals, or in just sufficient quantities or doses to correct the general secretions of the stomach and give tone to the digestive organs. The “Nerve Kestorer” should be taken after meals, in half-teaspoonful doses, or in just sufficient quantity to control and quiet the nervous system, and induce normal repose. Sorrow. Persons in sorrow and nervous from sudden misfortune or loss of a near and dear relative or friend, or distressed from any cause whatever, should adopt the following Treatment.—Take the “ Nerve Re- storer ” well diluted in water, after each meal and at bed-time, in suffi- ciently large doses to restore and quiet the brain and nervous power of the human system. If any derangement of the general secretions of the stomach exist, they should be corrected by taking occa- sional doses of the “ Elixir Vitas ” or “ New Life,” when necessary. Chorea, or St. Vitus’ Dance, Is an irregular involuntary contraction of some one or more of the voluntary muscles, occasionally assuming a frightful or even fatal form. It is mainly a disease of childhood, though occasionally it begins in early adult life, and in rare instances makes its appearance in old age. Symptoms —The symptoms generally come on grad- ually. Impairment of the general health is noticed in all cases. Defective appetite, Fcetid Breath, Inactivity of the Bowels, Swollen Abdomen, Depression of Spirits and other signs of Nervous Disorder, Irregular muscular action of the face, hands and shoulders are first noticed, until at length the whole body becomes more or less involved. The head, trunk and extremities are almost in constant motion ; the manner being a capricious and fantastic one, thus giving rise to the term, “ Insanity of Muscles Causes.—An unsteady, excitable state of the Nervous System, together with sex, constitutes one of the chief predisposing causes. Feeble health, disordered diges- tion, excitability of the nervous system, and whatever tends to debilitate the system and impoverish the blood, may be considered in connection with age and sex, as denoting a Choreic condition. Treatment.—If the bowels are constipated, take the “Elixir Vitae” or “New Life,” or the “Anti-Bilious Elixir” before meals in sufficient quantities or doses to produce several motions of the bowels daily. If the bowels fail to respond readily with the first few doses of the “Elixir” take the Pill of Pills until the desired result is accomplished, and afterwards continue with the “Elixir” in small doses, to correct the secretions, and allay all irritations. Control and quiet the spasmodic and involuntary muscular movements, by taking the “Nerve Restorer,” well diluted in water, and in sufficiently large doses. If great debility exists, take the Antiseptic Tonic between meals. Convulsions Are spasms of the muscles, generally attended with un- consciousness. Symptoms.—The attack may come on without warn- ing, muscles of the body may all be affected at once, one half, or only a single limb. Average duration is from five to twenty minutes, though may last hours and even days. Causes.—Fear, anger, surprise, sunstroke, falls or other accidents, teething, indigestion, worms, disordered state of the liver, etc. Treatment.—During th e paroxysms, place the patient where fresh and pure air can be breathed, loosen the clothing, hot wa er to the feet and cold water to the head. If due to worms, stomach or intestinal derange- ment, take the “ Elixir Vitae ” or “ New Life” in large doses to remove the cause. The “Nerve Restorer” should be taken in teaspoonful doses, more or less, ac- cording to age, after meals and at bed-time, to allay any tendency to spasmodic action. The diet should be nutritious and digestible. 6 Opium, Laudanum and Morphia Habits. ins with relaxation of the same,—the hands, however, are almost always clenched, the thumb being drawn within the palm, while the arms and legs are often thrust out with such suddenness and force as to seri- ously injure those who may come to his or her assist- ance. The duration of the attack may last from one to fifteen minutes; the first attack occurs most frequently at night during sound sleep, and in some persons only at night, nothing being known of the condition of the patient until some of the severer symptoms manifest themselves. In confirmed cases the patient falls sud- denly, without warning, loses all consciousness and sen- sibility, and his whole frame is violently agitated by convulsive movements, which after a few minutes sub- side. leaving him languid, stupid, vacant and comatose. As the attacks become morefrequentthe Brain and Nerve functions become more and more deranged, the memory and intellectual powers become more and more enfee- bled, until insanity is the inevitable result. It may take years for thi ■ to be accomplished, but frequently a few months suffice to produce the sad affliction. The general course of epilepsy is toward imbecility and im- pairment of the mental faculties. Dose and Directions.—The average dose and direc- tions for taking Dr. Kline's Great Nerve Restorer are as follows: Nervous and Delicate Ladies—Should take one half to one teaspoonful, more or less, after each meal, and one or two teaspoonfuls at bed-time, in a wineglassful of water, or sufficient to control the Ner- vous System. Overworked Business Men—Should take one teaspoonful after each meal, and one, two or three teaspoonfuls before retiring, or sufficient to control the Nervous System, and induce quiet, rest and sound sleep. For Nervous and Sick Headache, Full- ness of the Head, Brain Congestion, Verti- go, Dizziness, or Swimming of the Head- Take one teaspoonful diluted in water every hour or two until relieved, and afterward three or four times a day to prevent a recurrence of an attack. Nervous Wakefulness or Insomnia—Take one teaspoonful diluted in water two or three times a day; and at bed-time, one, two or three teaspoonfuls, or sufficient to overcome the inability to sleep. For Loss of Memory, Confusion of Ideas, Unpleasant Dreams, Dots or Specks be- fore the Eyes, Palpitation of the Heart, Melancholy, Sense of Self-Destruction, and for Excesses and Indiscretions gen- erally—Take one teaspoonful afier each meal, and one, two or three teaspoonfuls upon retiring, or suffi- cient to quiet the Nervous System. For Fits, Epilepsy, Spasms or Falling Sickness, St. Vitus Dance, Nervous Spells, etc , take as follows : Children from three to ten years of age, one-fourth to one-half teaspoonful after each meal, and medium tea- spoonful at bed-time in a little water (sweetened if pre- ferred); Foutlis from ten to fifteen years of age, a small tea- spoonful after each meal, and a large teaspoonful at bed-time in a wine-glassful or more of water (sweetened if preferred). All Persons from fifteen years to adult age should take one teaspoonful more or less, after each meal, and two teaspoonfuls at bed-time, in a wine-glassful or more of water. It should be distinctly understood that the above are the average doses, but while there are those who will not require more than half the dose, there are others again who will require two or three times the prescribed dose to quiet and control the nervous system. Patients taking or persons giving the medicine, should in all cases exercise a little judgment. >8Eg“ In all cases, if the tongue is white-coated, the breath bad, and if constipation exists, with occasional headache, the skin dry and husky with pimples on the face, chest and shoulders, indicating a deranged stom- ach, bowels and system, bad blood, etc., Dr. Kline’s “Elixir Yitae” should be taken in sufficient doses to correct the secretions, and to produce free action of the bowels daily. If great constipation exists, assist with Dr. Kline’s Pill of Pills, and if there is much weakness Opium eating, laudanum drinking, and hypodermic injections of morphia, are vices indeed, and terrible in their consequences. Language is too barren to describe the victim true to life. Treatment.—The patient must de- termine at once to discontinue the habit. First ascertain the amount ol Opium consumed per day, then com- mence to lessen the amount daily but guardedly; let the quantity be just appreciably lessened every one, two or three days; continue decreasing in tb is manner, cautiously yet persistently, until the appe- tite no longer craves it Whilst thus lessening, the •‘Nerve Restorer” should be taken in just sufficient quantity to maintain an influence over the nervous sys- tem, which is necessary to prevent any bad effects from reducing the quantity of opium; as the quantity of opium becomes considerably lessened, the dose of the “Nerve Restorer” should be increased correspondingly. If this plan of treatment be faithfully persevered in, a permanent cure will surely result. Alcobolism Is a disease confined to persons ad- dicted to Intemperance, Debauchery, Drunkenness, etc. Treatment.—The Nerve Restorer taken in large doses and frequently repeated scon gives tone and energy to the great nerves supplying the stomach, and allays the craving for stimulants. It is especially adapted for those who have been on a debauch or night’s dissipation. In all these classes of cases. Dr. Kline’s “Great Nerve Restorer" has no equal. Try it at once, and take no bogus or so-called Nervine or Nerve Remedies, claiming to perform cures or no pay, as they are worthless, and prepared only by impostors. Catalepsy Is characterized by a complete loss of consciousness and rigidity of the muscles. It may attack a single limb or the whole body. The attack may last a few minutes, hours, or even days. Causes.—Excitability of the nervous system, irrita- tion of the stomach, intestines, or of the female econ- omy. Treatment.—Move the bowels freely with the “ Pill of Pills," taken in full doses, afterwards keep up the ac- tion of the bowels moderately by taking the “ Elixir Vitae” or “New Life.” Take the “Nerve Restorer” after each meal, well diluted in water, and in sufficiently large doses to control and quiet the nervous system. If the patient be weak, pale, menstruation difficult or scanty, take Dr. Kline’s “Female Restorer” in pre- scribed doses. Epilepsy, Fits, Falling Sickness, Jerking Spasms, Frothing Convulsions, Chok- ing, Smothering Spells, Nervous Spells in General. Epilepsy is one of the most frequent of all nervous diseases. It is characterised by paroxysmal attacks of convulsions, with loss of sensibility, and unconscious- ness, without fever, and usually followed by coma. It occurs in all ages and both sexes. Symptoms.—These generally consist in a series of rapid and forcible contractions of the muscles, alternat- 7 and debility, tone and strengthen the system with Dr. Kline’s Antiseptic Tonic. All these medicines are per- fectly safe. If not eminently successful, consult Dr. Kline either by letter or in person at once. Importance in Continuing the Treatment. 49“Many persons afflicted with spasmodic nerve affections or fits, imagine they are cured because their spasms have been stopped by the first dose or first day's use of my "Great Nerve Restorer" and on discontinuing the treatment, their ‘‘Spells” return: Hence the rem- edy is often condemned, because ithasnothad sufficient time to produce that direct and specific effect upon the diseased action existing in the brain and nervous system, which is absolutely essential to perfect a permanent cure. The fact of the paroxysms being stopped is only the beginning of the cure. Continue, therefore, inces- santly, without missing a single dose, in order to retain the good effects obtained by the use of the first bottle. 49“ After taking the medicine a reasonable length of time, however, and the disease is apparently overcome, the dose may be gradually lessened from time to time, at long intervals, until none remains. But while les- sening the dose, do not fail to watch the symptoms elosely, and should there be signs of spasmodic action manifested while thus decreasing the dose, immediately recommence with full doses of the “Nerve Restorer,” and give regularly as previously directed until every vestige of disease is again overcome. An easily digesti- ble and nutritious diet, and a healthy condition of the stomach, liver and digestion must be at all times rigidly maintained. General Instructions. 49" During the “spasm” the patient should be laid on a large bed or on the floor; air is to be freely admit- ted around him, his head is to be raised, and his neck- tie (together with any other tight parts of the dress) loosened. A piece of cork or soft wood should, if possi- ble, be placed between the teeth, to prevent injury to the tongue. 4®"The patient should sleep on a good hard mattress, with the head well elevated, on a large firm pillow, and in a well ventilated room. 49“ Epileptics and those afflicted with various brain and nerve diseases should avoid all business pursuits, where a stooping position is required, such as black- smithing, gardening, trucking, scrubbing and allpositions which favor an active flow of blood to the brain. 4®*The patient should avoid all excitement; all ex. cesses, indiscretions, dissipations, mental anxiety, high- heat, over-exertion or exposure. 4®“Should abstain entirely from the use of all stimu- lants, including tea, coffee, alcohol, the use of tobacco, and everything that has a depressing influence on the nervous system. 49*The patient’s habits should be governed by good common sense. Daily open air exercise, early hours to retire, quiet occupation at home, and attention to the secretions and excretions of the body being necessary, while excessive mental excitement or exertion is, on the other hand, especially to be avoided. 4®“He should also avoid all pursuits requiring much mental labor and excitement, as Attorneys, Physicians, Merchants, Dealers in Stocks, Theatrical Subjects, etc., and should avoid extreme exposure to the sun. 49“Sleep —If, while under treatment, the patient is dull, drowsy, or inclined to sleep, allow him to indulge In the desire, even if it occupies nine-tenths of his time, and do not urge him to use exertion to which he is not inclined; let him havethe full benefitof all the rest and quiet he desires, as this condition is most favorable for the healing process which will surely follow under this plan of treatment. This sleepy condition, however, is not an essential effect in the treatment of Epilepsy, as very many cases are treated where no sleepiness is pro- duced, owing to a different stage of their disease. Instructions in Eating1. 4S“Epileptic patients and invalids, as a class, must never partake of any hog meat. No salt fish, boiled cabbage, fried meats or vegetables, rich gravies or dressings, or richly stewed oysters, chicken and lob- ster salads, should be eaten: while dried meats and sau- sages, nuts of all kinds, whether made up in candies or otherwise; cakes, pies and all forms of pastry or any irritating substances that are difficult of digestion must be studiously avoided. -6®“Avoid late suppers, dissipation, irregular habits of living, and abandon all vices, all excesses, indiscre- tions, and over-indulgences of every species. Epileptic Fits are noticed to be quite frequent in some cases during the night; these without doubt are often caused by hearty suppers, heavy or indigestible food; for when the functions of animal life are in repose, the organic nervous centres undoubtedly require increased excitability, and are consequently more readily thrown into irregular and violent activity by the irritant influ- ence, which indigestible or a superabundance of food produces. Epileptics must therefore be especially care- ful what they eat and how much they eat. Their meals should be between 6 and 7 A.M., 12 and 1 noon, and a light supper not later than 6 o’clock. 4®“Tfte following diet for epileptic and nervous pa- tients should be strictly adhered to. 49“Boiled, stewed, baked or roasted meats and vege- tables, (excepting cabbage, egg plant, and some lower order of vegetables) in moderate quantities are not injurious. Plain puddings of corn starch, rice, tapioca, and sago, ripe fruits well masticated, hominy, wheat grits, oatmeal porridge, cracked wheat, milk, soft boiled eggs, and all other plain nutritious and easily digested foods can be partaken of in such quantities as the appe- tite reasonably craves and the stomach will tolerate. 49“Send for my Work on “Dietetics,” or “ What Shall I Eat? ” 4®*A$2 00 trial bottle of my “Great Nerve Restorer” will be sent free to every new case of Fits or Falling Sick- ness on the explicit terms, that the express charges will be paid on the box when received, and if any perceptible benefit is derived from the use of the trial bottle, they will then be willing to continue in the treatment, accord- ing to directions, until a permanent cure, if possible, is effected. Patients in writing for a free $2.00 trial bottle of my “Great Nerve Restorer,” will avoid delay in re- ceiving the same by stating the fact that they will be pleased to comply with these conditions. How many bottles of your Nerve Restorer will it require to effect a cure ? This query is brought to my notice daily, in correspondence witli my patients. To all these I will say that it is impossible to state accurately the amount of medicine necessary to effect a cure in each and every individual case. A reasonable length of times is requisite in all cases to remove the diseased action existing in the brain and nervous system, which time naturally varies in accordance with the extent of the disease, complica- tions that may exist or arise during treatment and the absence of assurance that my directions for treatment, medicinal, hy- gienic, dietetic or other advice will be faithfully followed. Many patients are cured with one bottle, a great many with a few bottles, whilst there are others, and especially those of a complicated character, that may require months or even years to overcome their nervous troubles. USsF" Ordering Medicine. After receiving the ‘‘Trial Bottle,” and using a por- tion of its contents, it is advisable to send for more, in order that the patient may not be without the medicine, and thus retain the advantage obtained by an uninter- rupted course of treatment. 49“ When ordering it is not economy to send for a single bottle from any distance, especially from any great distance, as the express charges on one bottle are nearly as great as upon half a dozen bottles. Again, by ordering six bottles, you pay only Ten Dollars thus sav- ing two dollars by purchasing in quantity; or send $5.00 for three two dollar bottles, and save $1.00 and propor- tionately less expense on transportation. 4®“Persons ordering one or more of my medicines sent to them, Should be particular in writing the full Name, Post-Office and nearest Express Office plainly, so as to avoid all errors and delay in receiving their medicine promptly. Caution.—Beware of daring and unblushing frauds, who claim to cure Fits, Epilepsy, etc.—no cure, no pay, return money, etc. Send for their'credentials. Be sure a physician is prescribing for you, and do not be de- ceived by the boastful promises of impostors, who are not physicians, and have no claim whatever on the pro- fession. Mark them and beware of them. 8 FEMALE DEPARTMENT OF THE PHILADELPHIA BELLEVUE INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY, 931 A 933 ARClI ST., PHILADELPHIA, PA. D., 931 Arch Street. Philadelphia, Pa, Treating Patients at their Homes. It is always better to have the advantages of a careful personal examination of patients, especially in complicated forms o ' disease, or of a surgical nature; but there are many who cannot come from great distances to Philadelphia for the purpose ot consultation, to say nothing of the inconvenience of remaining long from home, or of long delay for treatment; and hence the necessity of the most perfect plan possible for their treatment at home. Such are the improvements and facilities for the diagnosis of disease and treatment of patients at their homes at present, tnat I am enabled to prepare and forward suitable remedies, specifically adapted to all curable diseased conditions, with almost a* much confidence of success as though I had the patient before me in my Office or Institute. In fact, of tho thousands upon thousands of patients treated, cured and under treatment at the present time, not one in hundreds has ever been at my Office or Institute or have consulted me in person The physician determines the nature of the disease by the symptoms and history of the case, as, for example, if we receive a severe blow on the head, ihero may be sickness, nausea and vomiting; if the stomach is deranged, the head will ache; if the liver is diseased, there may be a pain in the shoulder; a pain in the great toe indicates gout; certain peculiar sounds indicate certain diseases of the heart and lungs; and also certain well defined symptoms, as pain in back, limbs, etc., indicate diseases peculiar to the female sex; and thus I might enumerate symptoms indefinitely. In the same way we know the remedh s, by their having certain specific influences over certain parts of the body, as, for example, belladonna and gelseminum on the eye, asclepin on the pleura, veratrum on the heart and arteries, opium and other agents on the nerves, aloes on the lower bowel, sulphur and arsenic cn the skin, uva-ursi on the kidneys; and thus, too, I might continue on until I had exhausted the Materia Medica. By thus possessing the true knowledge of diseases and their remedies, we apply the remedies adapted to the diseased conditions. To assist the afflicted, therefore, in corresponding with me in relation to their difficulties, they will please answer correctly the questions in this list, always stating age, sex, occupation, habits and general condition of the functions of the body; and at the same time give me such other information of their cases as they may have bearingspecially upon the subject. In Consideration of the amount of letters continually coming from all parts of the country, the Canadas, etc., such as those contained in this sheet, it is but fair to believe that no other MEDICINAL PREPARATION has ever received the ENCOMIUMS and PRAISE as DR. KLINE’S GREAT NERVE RESTORER, which is such a prominent feature in his treatment of Epilepsy and Nervous Disease. Please read as follows : •• Two Bottles Of Your Nerve Rectorer Has Made A Permanent Cure.” Francisco, Stokes Co., N. C., Sept. 30th, 1889. Dr. R. H. Kline—Dear Sir : I was afflicted with Epi- lepsy for 18 years, brought on by a gun-shot wound re- ceived at Gettysburg, Pa., 1863. I tried all the medical aid that could bo had, without any relief, and paid out hundreds of dollars. Two bottles of your Great Nerve Restorer I consider have made a permanent cure. I was so much relieved by taking one bottle of your medicine that I was able to represent my County in the Legisla- ture of 1889. Now I want to say to all suffering human- ity, that is afflicted with any nervous affection, that Dr. Kline's Great Nerve Restorer is no humbug. I honestly believe that his medicine taken according to directions will effect a permanent cure. . Respectfully, James A. Leake. “I Am Enjoying Good Health.” Bassett, Neb., Sept. 28th, 1889. R. H. Kline, M. D.—Dear Sir: “In answer to yours of the 9th, I would say that 1 return many thanks, and hope you may be blessed with good health and success. 1 am enjoying good health, and have had no symptoms of fits since using your world-renowned Great Nerve Restorer. D.—Dear Sir: “I will give you my praises in behalf of your Great Nerve Restorer. 1 received only a trial bottle, which has done me more good than any medicine I ever took. 1 think it has made a final cure of me. Your remedy is wonderful and its value unknown. I am sure I was not able to make a support for my family until I took your Great Nerve Restorer, and now I am able to do my daily labor. Wishing you success, I remain, Yours 1 ruly, Gabriel A. Jones. “ Entirely Well By Using Four Bottles.” Anderson, S. C., Sept. 20th, 1889. R. H. Kline, M. Y., Sept. 18th, 1889. Dr. K. H. Kline,—Dear Sir: “I received your Great Nerve Restorer all right and began taking it according to directions, and to-day I feel like a new-born child. God knows 1 can’t express to you the kindness you have done for me; it puts me in mind of reading when Christ was on earth and healing the sick, and what you have done for me is the next step to His. 1 am writing just my feelings. I was taken with fits five years ago, and inside of twenty-four hours I had some eighty fits*and the doctors said I was the only man who ever lived and had so many, and more said the same thing, and I can prove it by fifty people here in East Florence. Since I have taken your Great Nerve Restorer, I have not had one of those feelings. I feel bright and sleep as good as I ever did. I can’t recommend your medicine high enough.” Yours truly, Charles J. Coates. “And I Have Received Entire Satisfaction.” Clayton, Wis., July 27th, 1889. Prop. R. H. Kline, M. He could neither walk nor talk when we first sent to you as a last resort, thinking there was nothing but idiocy left for our bright boy, but thank God it has cured him, for long before the second bottle was taken ho could walk, 14 talk and run as fast as ever. The 30th of May was the last one he had and no sign of anymore. Oh, doctor, can you imagine our joy at his recovery after four doc- tors failing utterly, and telling us there was no hope for him ?
