Viburnum Opulus. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1881, BY W. R. HAYDEN, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington. K Phtsiciahs ino Cyhecoldqists. | We have the gratification of presenting you with this circular, a copy of our illustrated Hand-Book, containing a large num- ber of testimonials,-the properties, uses and doses of one of the most extraordinary and sat- isfactory Medicinal Preparations of this or any other age, and one we are fully confident will meet not only with your warmest commenda- tion but your most decided approval, when once you have fully tested its remarkable vir- tues in Gentlemen : DYSMENORRHEA, MENORRHAGIA. and in the particular cases for which it is specially recommended. We allude to THE VIBURNUM COMPOUND of Dr. Hayden, who was also the originator of the Compound Phosphorus Pills. Every physician (we make no exceptions) who has fully tested the virtues of the Virburnum Compound, will cheerfully and gladly endorse its merits. We have great pleasure in referring you to any of the one hundred and fifty medical gentlemen whose names are given in the Hand-Book, or to any other physician who has ever employed the Viburnum Compound of Dr. Hayden, for their verdict is universally in its favor. Most respectfully yours, THE N, Y. PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY. Bedford Mineral Springs. Mass. VIBURNUM OPULUS. (HIGH CRANBERRY.) The Viburnum Compound. The Formula of W. B. Hayden, M. D. TO THE MEDICAL PROFESSION. Gentlemen, - We most respectfully ask your attention to some of the evidences in favor of a remedy of more than ordinary efficacy, and one which has met with more general approval than any other in the hands of the Profession - The Viburnum Compound - the formula of Dr. Hayden, which is prepared expressly and solely for Physicians' prescriptions. The testimonials and evidences of its merits which we give in this circular from well-known practitioners are as strong as human testimony can make them. Truly Yours, The New York Pharmaceutical Co. Viburnum Opulus, (The Basis of the Viburnum Compound,) more commonly known as the High Cranberry, is not a new remedy, but an old and tried one, possessing far greater merit as a medicine than any of the boasted "New Remedies" of which we read so much. For many years a few practitioners have been familiar with the more than ordinary virtues of the bark of the Viburnum Opulus, or High Cranberry, a beautiful shrub or tree, growing from seven to twelve feet high, on the hill-sides in the more northerly parts of New England, and also in Canada, attracting attention in June by its handsome, showy flowers, of a reddish-white, and later in the season by its clusters of bright red berries, which, though much smaller than the ordinary meadow cranberry, resembles it both in color and taste. The properties of the bark of the Viburnum Opulus are anti- spasmodic and nervine, and while exerting great power in relaxing muscular rigidity and contraction, it yet exerts a still greater influ- ence as a uterine tonic, imparting tone and strength to the female organs of generation. The Viburnum Opulus is the basis of the Viburnum Compound, which as a remedy for DYSMENORRHCEA approaches as near a specific as any thing in medicine, rarely fail- ing to afford relief in the worst cases in a few minutes, excelling all other known remedies, exciting the deepest gratitude on the part of the suffering patient, and the highest admiration of the physician who may have tried all other means in vain. One of the remarkable peculiarities of the Viburnum Compound is its beneficial effects in cases apparently opposite, and seeming to call for different remedies. Thus in amenorrhcea, by its tonic influence, it excites the normal flow and period while in MENORRHAGIA, and flooding from any cause, it checks it by equalizing the circula- tion of the blood and causing a natural action of the functions. In 4 prolapsus uteri and debility of that organ and its muscles, it excites its most beneficial influence by stimulating a natural flow of the pent up fluids in the engorged tissues, relieving the uterus and its appendages of their stagnant currents of morbid blood, loaded with the humors of the body, which, when concentrated and retained an undue length of time, induce LEUCORRHCEA and a long train of evils. It is the engorgement of the womb, the ovaries and fallopian tubes that often cause ovarian diseases, polypus, hypertrophy, cauliflower, excresence, tumors, congestion, and that most dreaded of all diseases, cancer. One of the first manifestations of disease in the uterus is generally ulceration of the cervix, which shows an acrid condition of the fluids. The diseases enumerated in their turn by a reflex action upon the nervous system cause HYSTERIA, nervous prostration, insomnia, and a thousand and one distressing symptoms which we have no time or space to enumerate here, our province not being to write a treatise on morbid conditions of the system, but rather to call attention to the great merits of a remedy, which certainly exerts a most healthful influence over an organ which is very susceptible to dangerous and fatal diseases, and which also taxes the highest skill of the medical man to successfully combat. We copy from the "American Dispensary" the following in re- gard to the properties and uses of the Viburnum Opulus : " High Cranberry is a very powerful anti-spasmodic, and in consequence of this property, is more generally known by the name of Cramp Bark. It is more effective in relaxing cramps and spasms of all kinds, as Asthma, Hysteria, Cramps of the Limbs and other parts, in females, especially during pregnancy, and it is said to be highly beneficial to those who are subject to convulsions during pregnancy, or at parturi- tion, preventing the attacks entirely, if used daily for the last two or three months of gestation." The preparation which has given such a prominence to the Vibur- num Opulus, and has excited so much inquiry among physicians, and brought it into special and deserved favor, is the VIBURNUM COMPOUND, from the formula of Dr. Hayden, which was first presented to the notice of the profession, fifteen years ago, and which has been and still is prepared exclusively by The New York Pharmaceutical Com- 5 pany for physicians' prescriptions, and is dispensed by all reliable apothecaries. We think we are justified in asserting that no one medicinal preparation has met with more decided and universal favor from medical men, than the Viburnum Compound, not excepting the Compound Phosphorus Pills, which were also originated by Dr. Hayden, and which have attained a world-wide reputation in the treatment of nervous disorders among all classes of physicians. PROLAPSUS UTERI. This almost universal derangement is the standing reproach of the Gynecologist, more thought, study, and experiment having been devoted to misplacements of the uterus, and their unfortunate results than to any one, or all other ills that the female is heir to; all mechanical appliances and contrivances beyond their mere temporary employment proving more depressing than restorative, by throwing the uterine muscles and their fibre into disuse, and consequently increased relaxation and debility. The indication desired to be ful- filled is to tone up and contract the uterine fibre, and nothing but a remedy having this property, and a special affinity for the uterus will bring about this most happy result. The experience and testimony of more than two thousand physicians have been given in favor of the Viburnum Compound of Dr. Hayden as being decidedly the best of uterine tonics. DYSMENORRHCEA, Functional and mechanical. These two conditions often exist in consequence of a lack of physical development. The great majority of young women suffer more or less severely at the regular catamenia, the immediate cause of which is usually induced by a congested state of the ovaries, a contraction of the fallopian tubes, or a stricture of the cervix uteri and seclusion of the os-tincea. One or all of the above conditions may exist at one and the same time. Whatever will act directly upon these organs and relax them, will at once miti- gate the suffering and restore a normal action. Mechanical inter- ference will be sufficient in a few cases to afford relief, but is always objectionable to the patient and to be avoided by the physician when a more agreeable remedy will answer the purpose equally well. In no way can the practitioner win reputation and gratitude so quickly as by relieving his patient if she be agonized with pain from dysmen- orrhcea. The original prescription of the Vibqrnum Compound was written more than twenty years since, by W. R. Hayden, m.d., of New York City, and it has during that time proved more successful in the complaint under consideration than any other known remedy. For special directions, see page 23. An eminent physician in New York of large experience, (whose name is at the service of any physician who may require it), stated to the writer of these pages, a most remarkable experience which he had in the employment of the Viburnum Compound, in cases of menorrhagia, and in flooding from MISCARRIAGE, where it fulfilled the desired indications after all other means usually employed had failed. The Viburnum Compound does not depend upon the peculiar properties or action of any one plant, but by a happy and scientific combination of several, whose united influence produce the desired results. Some physicians profess to object to " compounds." Pray, will they tell us what vegetable is a simple or w hat remedy they employ that is not strictly a compound ? Respectfully, S. JACKSON,. M. D. 16 New York City. To the New York Pharmaceutical Company. Gentlemen; - Permit me to offer my testimonial to the great merits of Dr. Hayden's Viburnum Compound. To have written the original prescription, the greatest name in the Profession might well be proud. I have had a large personal experience in the administration of the Viburnum Compound, and it has so uniformly fulfilled the desired indication, that I have come to rely upon it as an old and tried friend. It has given me more solid faith in the efficacy of medicine than anything else in my long practice. Truly yours, JOHN D. KELLY, M. D. Marshall, Clark Co., Illinois. W. R. Hayden, m. d.,-Dear Sir;-I have given your Viburnum a fair and extensive trial, with great satisfaction to myself and relief to my patients. I find in all cases of Dysmenorrhoea, where such is not dependent on mechanical obstruction, i. e. narrowing of canal, it is almost a specific, and even where mechanical obstruction exists, it affords great relief. I take more than ordinary interest in this matter as for ten years past I have had put up for my own use a preparation of sassafras, peppermint, golden seal, and ether, which I have used for the same purpose, but I am free to confess that your preparation is by far the most efficient. Yours truly, GEO. DIOG, M. D. Rutland, Vt. New York Pharmaceutical Company: Gents:-Some two or three months since one of your agents gave me a sample of Hayden's Viburnum Compound, which I gave to one of my patients with pleasing effects. I have tried to obtain more of it from some of our druggists but have failed to do so. Will you please send me a pound, C. O. D.; hoping to hear from you soon, 1 remain, Most respectfully, JOHN A. MEAD, m. d. Cincinnati, Ohio, Jan. 7, 1881. W. R. Hayden, m. d.,- Dear Doctor;-As useful medicines scientifically prepared and honorably introduced should have the encouragement of all who have used and found them invaluable to those suffering from specific trou- bles. I most cheerfully state, unsolicited, that I have for many years while engaged in a large practice in Cincinnati, O., used your Vibur- num Compound for the relief of those who were suffering from Dysmenorrhoea, and scarcely ever have I been disappointed when ex- pecting prompt and satisfactory relief, provided the medicine was used according to directions. If more physicians used your Compound, in my opinion there would be less female suffering. Yours very respectfully, O. E. NEWTON, m. d. GOODWIN & CO. P. S. - We have sold Dr. Hayden's Viburnum Compound for more than ten years, it being employed almost exclusively for physi- cians' prescriptions, and during all that time we have never received a complaint of its want of efficacy, but, on the contrary, the very high- est encomiums of its great value in the cases for which it is recom- mended. GEO. C. GOODWIN & CO. We have received a larger number of testimonials to the efficacy of the Viburnum Compound from physicians than have ever been given for any other medicine in the United States, and we do not hesitate to say that it will give more decided satisfaction to both the practi- tioner and patient than any other remedy. Were it necessary we could extend the list with the names of well-known physicians in various parts of the country, who cordially endorse the superior merits of our Viburnum Compound. We are confident that physicians who once become familiar with the Vibur- num Compound of Dr. Hayden will in nowise be without it in the list of their most favorite remedies, as more satisfactory results can be obtained by its employment in the cases for which it is specially recommended than by any other medicinal preparation in this or any other country. - In the city of Providence, R. I., nine out of every ten physicians prescribe Hayden's Viburnum Compound. It is also largely pre- scribed in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and in most of the States. The Viburnum Compound often induces Long and Quiet Sleep, from which the patient awakes refreshed, the head clear, and the ner- vous system invigorated by its tonic influence, which is never the case after taking narcotics. In all forms of internal pain in both sexes, tne most prompt re- lief is obtained in a few minutes. In Diarrhoea, Cholera Morbus, Cholera, Cramps, Spasms, Bilious Colic and nervous excitement, physicians will appreciate its happy effects upon their patients. The Viburnum Compound contains No Preparation of Opium, or other narcotic, and may be administered freely in doses of one to two tea-spoonfuls, and repeated every fifteen or twenty minutes, with- 19 out any unpleasant after-effects, or causing any anxiety in the mind of the prescriber of having given an overdose. The Viburnum Com- pound is as essential in the physician's visiting case as Morphia or Quinia, and it will be so appreciated. ' It is not offensive to the taste or stomach, and is acceptable to children. General Directions. - Dose for adults, from one-half to two tea-spoonfuls in a table-spoonful of hot water or milk, and repeat every fifteen or twenty minutes in acute cases until relief is obtained. Valuable Formulae It having been suggested by many physicians that valuable formulas, and original prescriptions that were the result of professional experience would be acceptable to many practitioners, particularly so to those in the country, remote from the great medical centres, and also to the younger members of the profession, the following valu- able formulae are presented to those who may desire to employ them, with the remark that several of them are of more than ordinary value to the Gynecologist. Long experience and observation has led the writer of these pages to the conclusion that in the majority of female complaints (if not in all), there is an acid condition of the fluids, particularly of the mu- cous membrane, and that this acid state should be neutralized as the first step in a successful treatment. Viburnum Opulus, Dioscorea Villosa, Scutellaria Lateriflora, And a combination of aromatics. For the administration of the Viburnum Compound in dysmenorrhoea. In cases where the patient suffers greatly at the monthly period, it is well to commence by giving her tea-spoonful doses of the Viburnum Compound every night for a week previous to the usual time. Immediately on the appearance of the catemenia, give her two-tea-spoonful doses of the Viburnum Compound every half-hour in a wine-glassful of hot water, sweetened, and continue to do so until relief is obtained, unless the stomach rejects it, in which case the dose should be reduced until it is tolerated. In very severe cases and spasms, hot applications to the loins and inferior extrem- ities are valuable aids as relaxants and keeping up a healthy circula- tion. Frequently after taking the Viburnum Compound, the patient will sleep soundly for several hours from the sudden cessation of pain, in such cases she should never be awakened through any fear of oversleeping, as the Viburnum Compound does not contain any narcotic whatever, nor does it leave any disagreeable after-effects and it may be given to a child, when necessary, without any special caution.
