McMurtrie \ s JAM 39 1917 NEW YORK 1916 A LIST OF AMERICAN ORGANIZATIONS FOR CRIPPLES Douglas C. McMurtrie New York On account of the constant growth in the number of institu- tions and organizations for cripples in the United States, it seems desirable to publish a list of those now in operation. The compilation given herewith is revised to April 1, 1916. Part I comprises institutions or departments of institutions for the care and education of cripples. All organizations exclu- sively for the crippled come within this classification. Where the orthopedic divisions of the general hospitals make extensive contribution to the treatment of cripples they are included in the list. The orthopedic departments of some general or chil- dren's hospitals do more work for cripples than several smaller institutions exclusively for the deformed. To omit them, there- fore, would be to overlook important factors in the situation. By no means all hospitals doing orthopedic work are listed; only those with special departments approximating the service and facilities of a special institution. Many of these make educa- tional provision as well. Part II comprises summer homes not operating as branches of the institutions listed in Part I. Part III lists a few institutions making provision for cripples, but not emphasizing this feature of work, and not maintaining a special department for the deformed. An asterisk (*) indicates that organization has been effected but that building or actual operation has not been begun. A dagger (f) indicates that building is in course of construction. Corrections of this list are earnestly invited in order that they may be incorporated in a revised edition soon to be published. I.
